Outdoor Candle Lanterns - Alternatives To Metal

One way to brighten up your backyard with outdoor candle lanterns is to use paper candle lanterns.

A popular way to use paper candle lanterns is to put them on a string and run the string between posts or trees. This provides an interesting and fun way to brighten the area for events.

We previously mentioned paper candle lanterns and noted how they are made with specially formulated paper that is resistant to flame. Most paper lanterns use bamboo ribbing by which the paper is stretched over.

Many paper lanterns leave a hole so that any excess wax will drip through. However, to avoid any problems with flame or wax, the “fake candle” can also be used.

This candle is an LED battery operated “candle” which is completely safe (no flame) and offers a flickering light which mimics real candle light.

Nylon lanterns are similar in size and structure to paper lanterns. However, instead of bamboo, the ribbing is usually fire-resistant plastic and the paper is replaced by shimmering nylon.

Another alternative lanterns is the Silk Lantern.

Silk Lanterns are typically made with a hardened silk fabric that is stretched over a frame. These lanterns use the same LED battery-operated candle to prevent fire. One particular brand of silk lanterns (inspired by traditional Vietnamese lanterns) uses 100% Jacquard silk.

As you can see, the range of available outdoor candle lanterns is not just limited to lanterns constructed solely of metal.

Decorative Outdoor Candle Lanterns

“Form follows function” is an apt description of the types of candle lanterns you will find

For each outdoor candle lantern design, there is a unique structure.

If you are going with an Asian theme in your space, a simple zen lantern might suffice. Or you might opt for a more detailed pagoda lantern

Zen candle lanterns harken back to times before electricity, in the Far East. Typical zen lanterns are iron, square in shape and usually no more than 6 or 7 inches tall.

Pagoda lanterns also bring back the days of ancient Asia. Typical pagoda lanterns are iron, square in shape, taper upwards so that the top is smaller than the bottom and allow the candlelight to shine through intricate cutout panels in the sides.

If you are going for a more Wild West look, a rustic lantern is an excellent choice.

A typical rustic lantern might look like something out of a Western movie. It will be made of metal and it will have a handle as well as a wide base (which will allow it to be hung and set on a flat surface).

If you want a more Arabic inspired theme, then Moroccan lanterns are a good bet. One type of Moroccan candle lantern is made of metal, is hexagonal in shape and has colored glass panels.

These are just some options you have when considering outdoor candle lanterns. The choice is up to you and your unique style.

Outdoor Candle Lanterns - How To Buy And Use Them

Outdoor Candle Lanterns are easy to install and a low-cost way to adorn your house and garden. While many hardware stores and “big box” stores stock candle lanterns on their shelves, your choices are limited to their current stock. Because of the huge selection and diversity of choices, the best way to find candle lanterns is on the internet via sites like this one.

The most important part of a candle lantern is the lantern holder ( which ensures the candle is supported and protected from the elements). When you go to buy a lantern, you must first make sure that the lantern holder is durable and fire-proof.  Typically, candle lanterns are made of metal, but there are paper lanterns which are composed of specially manufactured paper that is fire-resistant. Once you have ensured that the lantern holder is sufficient, you can then move onto location.

Another important concern as well as where you will place it. Depending upon the unique characteristics of your home and garden, the possibilities and combinations are almost limitless.

A few ways in which candle lanterns can be used are;

  • Placing a set of lanterns on a patio wall in order to illuminate the area around the wall.
  • Using them to light rear or side entrances in order to provide security
  • Lighting steps, pathways and driveways
  • Placing candle lanterns on each porch post
  • Hanging them from tree branches

Stay tuned for our next posts on the different types of outdoor candle lanterns.
