“Form follows function” is an apt description of the types of candle lanterns you will find when considering them for your outdoor lighting scheme.

For each outdoor candle lantern design, there is a unique structure.

If you are going with an Asian theme in your space, a simple zen lantern might suffice. Or you might opt for a more detailed pagoda lantern

Zen candle lanterns harken back to times before electricity, in the Far East. Typical zen lanterns are iron, square in shape and usually no more than 6 or 7 inches tall.

Pagoda lanterns also bring back the days of ancient Asia. Typical pagoda lanterns are iron, square in shape, taper upwards so that the top is smaller than the bottom and allow the candlelight to shine through intricate cutout panels in the sides.

If you are going for a more Wild West look, a rustic lantern is an excellent choice.

A typical rustic lantern might look like something out of a Western movie. It will be made of metal and it will have a handle as well as a wide base (which will allow it to be hung and set on a flat surface).

If you want a more Arabic inspired theme, then Moroccan lanterns are a good bet. One type of Moroccan candle lantern is made of metal, is hexagonal in shape and has colored glass panels.

These are just some options for outdoor lighting that you have when considering outdoor candle lanterns. The choice is up to you and your unique style.
